Northeast Harbor is a village on Mount Desert Island. Located in the town of Mount Desert, Northeast Harbor has a large summer population. Surrounded by Acadia National Park, the community is a popular summer residence. The Rockefellers, well known summer residents of Northeast Harbor, have donated land to Acadia National Park and helped build the popular carriage road trails.
A beautiful and protected harbor, Northeast Harbor is at the entrance of Somes Sound, which is the only fjord on the east coast of the United States.
Besides picturesque natural surroundings, downtown Northeast Harbor has a thriving Main Street with boutiques, restaurants, and galleries.

New Mt. Desert Visitor Center Begins to Take Shape
 |
|
Harbor Master, Shawn Murphy, shows MDCOC Board Member, Sally Black, around the construction site. |
As part of the redevelopment of the Marina in Northeast Harbor, the MDCOC is thrilled to be handling the day-to-day operation of this unique new Visitor Center, which is one of the centerpieces of the ambitious project.
Benefits of the new Visitor Center Include:
-
The prominent location will lead to a sharply increased level of "foot traffic."
-
Rather than serving primarily
yachtsmen, the new facility will truly be a "Visitor Center,"

attracting patrons from car, bus, and boat.
-
Increased visitation means an increased level of visibility not just for our business community, but for everything that makes our community unique and worth visiting.
-
The Visitor Center gives us the ability to increase our visitor retention rate, and encourage them to spend their money within our community and plan a return trip.

So You Think You Know Mount Desert?
Do you know the perfect spot to have a picnic? The trail that provides the most scenic views? What about who to call if you need a leaky pipe fixed, or where to take some last second house guests for a good meal? If so, we invite you to join us!
With a new "Visitor Center" on the horizon for our community, the MDOC is hoping to establish a group of volunteers willing to share their knowledge with visitors as well as locals. If you'd like to lend a hand, or think you know someone who does, please email us.
